Why curved costs three times as much
A curved rail is manufactured to the exact geometry of your staircase: every bend, every landing, every change of pitch. It is measured photographically, built for your house, and will fit no other.
That custom manufacturing is where both the cost and the several-week lead time come from. It is not a markup, it is a different product.

Will It Block the Stairs?
No. The seat, footrest and arms fold up against the rail when not in use, leaving the staircase usable by everyone else in the house.
Does It Damage the Wall?
No. A stairlift fixes to the stair treads, not the wall, so no structural work is needed and nothing is drilled into plaster or tile.
What If the Power Goes Out?
Stairlifts run on batteries that charge from a standard outlet, so they keep working through a power cut. That matters in an ice storm.
Is It Safe to Use Alone?
Yes. Seat belts, safety sensors that stop the lift if something is on the stairs, and a seat that swivels and locks at the top so you step off on level ground.
Can It Be Removed Later?
Yes. A stairlift is not a permanent alteration. It comes off the stairs and leaves only small fixing points in the treads.

Funding a Stairlift in Ontario
There is a lot of confusion about this online, so here is the accurate position.
A stairlift is a home modification, not an assistive device. That means the Assistive Devices Program, which funds wheelchairs, walkers and scooters, does not generally fund stairlifts, whatever you may read elsewhere.
The main route is the Home & Vehicle Modification Program, run by March of Dimes Canada for the Ontario government, which provides up to $15,000 lifetime for home modifications including stairlifts. An occupational therapist assessment is required.
Depending on your circumstances, ODSP, WSIB for a work-related injury, Veterans Affairs Canada, or Spinal Cord Injury Ontario may also apply.
